Fourth grade students showed how they were Empowered Learners by researching and editing a nonfiction book on an animal habitat of their choice. After they completed the research, rough draft (along with teacher & peer reviews), they wrote and illustrated their final copies. Once their book was complete, they created a shoebox diorama of their habitat, a digital habitat using TinkerCad and a Canva presentation. At FLIP night they polished their Effective Communicator skills by presenting to families. The final stage of the project was creating a digital reflection in Canva to save as an artifact for their Spencer County Profile of a Learner.

Spencer County Community;

We are dealing with a Water Main break on Highway 44 that has affected both SCES and SCMS. Unfortunately, the repair may be prolonged and we donโ€™t feel that having school for a full day is possible. As a result, we will be dismissing early today, Tuesday, October 21, 2025.

We will release at the following times:
Spencer County High School, Hillview Academy, and Spencer County Middle School will release at 1:00 PM
Spencer County Elementary School, Taylorsville Elementary School, and Preschool will release at 2:15 PM.
All after school programs at SCES and SCMS will be cancelled.

Please know this is a last resort and we apologize for any inconvenience caused to our families and our community.

Best,
Dr. Willie Foster, Superintendent

1st grade began a new unit in our MyView curriculum today on how living things grow and change. This week our learning target is โ€œhow do animals grow and change? We began with a text called โ€œA Kit Grows Upโ€ and got to see real life baby bunnies or kits that Mrs. Travis is fostering to return to the wild! 1st graders were Engaged Citizens today as they discussed how to respect the environment and care for baby animals.

Taylorsville Elementary Families;

This morning, a student reported that an airsoft-style pistol was in another student's possession on route 4 while their bus was transiting to TES. The driver immediately took possession of the item and reported it to the administration, where it was found to be empty. As the bus arrived at TES, it was met by building leaders and an SRO was contacted. The item was never in a classroom or the school.

We commend the students who took action to inform their driver, helping to keep their friends safe. It is this type of positive action that makes Spencer County a great place for our students to grow together.

This situation is serious and is being treated so by local law enforcement and the school system. We are addressing the incident and assigning consequences according to the Spencer County Schools Code of Conduct as the investigation continues.

Please do not hesitate to contact Taylorsville Elementary School Principal, Ms. Sarah Steele, at (502) 477-3339 with any additional information you or your student may have, questions about the Code of Conduct, or concerns you wish to address. Please note that specific information regarding the students involved cannot be addressed, but general questions regarding policy and procedures are able to be answered.
Again, we want to commend the students and bus driver who handled the issue immediately, keeping our school, students, and staff safe. We ask that firearms, weapons, dangerous instruments, and look-alike weapons be kept up and away from children. This helps ensure the safety of our children, schools, and community.
Sincerely,

Ms. Sarah Steele, Principal
